On January 23rd, The Wisconsin Rapids Kiwanis Club hosted their second annual Youth Outdoors Day – Winter Edition. This project started as an offshoot of their Youth Outdoors Day held the past three summers.
The event was held at YMCA Camp Alexander in Wisconsin Rapids. At the event families were able to test their skills at x-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing, nature photography, winter camping, trapping and more.
The event was free to anyone attend and all the necessary equipment was provide free of cost as well. “The goal of the event is to encourage families to get outdoors during the winter months,” said Josh Schoenick, the project chairmen. “Many winter outdoor activities are equipment based. The average family won’t plop down hundreds of dollars on equipment in fear that they may not like the sport. We have removed that barrier by providing any equipment they may need for the day.”
Josh pointed out that the Wood County Health Department estimates 45% of population is considered overweight or obese. That’s 10% higher than the 35% national average. Additionally, children are becoming more sedentary which is leading growing health concerns including Type II diabetes.
The next outdoors event will be held at Lake Wazeecha in Wisconsin Rapids on Saturday, June 5th. The club is planning more than 20 activities including canoeing, fishing, archery, shooting sports, and much more.
