On this last day of February 2009, volunteers from our community and as far north as Mercer shared their sports with 45 area residents.
Attendees enjoyed snowshoeing and skiing and learned about winter camping, dog powered sports such as dog sledding and skijoring (cross country skiing while being pulled by dogs) and trapping and fur bearing animals.
We would like to thank Mary Joe (MJ) Slone and Chad McGrath for their presentations of dog powered sports. Ron Nelson, his family, and the River Cities Nordic Ski Club for helping out with the Nordic ski instruction and trail grooming. Tom Leslie and Kevin Bean for the snowshoe instruction and maintenance of the Nepco Lake trails as well as Port Edward School District for they support through providing equipment. Al Nichols, Bruce Henderson and the Wisconsin Trappers Association for their presentation on trapping and providing their collection of furs and traps.
An event like this would not be possible without the generosity of individual’s like those listed above and the support of the Kiwanis Club, providing our community a unique opportunity to try some new outdoor activities. 100% of the attendees had never snowshoed and 80% had never nordic skiied, what a great opportunity for them today. 100% noted after the event, on a comment card, they would recommend the event to a friend.
